Wednesday is “Grandma Day” for my boys. On our way there, I met my neighbor on the gravel road. We waved and smiled, like always, and a few minutes later, I got a text that said that she was “childless” for the day. Her kids were also having a “Grandma Day.”
So I immediately called her and suggested we take a little walk. Her husband’s family owns this farm, and they are planning to bulldoze it and convert it to crop land this spring. We’ve been wanting to walk through the old house, and I wanted to take some pictures, so we took advantage of the almost-40-degree-childless-day and headed over there!
Oh, how extraordinarily sad that another homestead is going to be bulldozed. I don't think another acre or two of land is going to make or break any farmer, but we saw considerable evidence of that at Thanksgiving when we were in Iowa. Sorry if this goes against your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures! And what a lovely farm that must have been back in it's hay day.
ReplyDeleteIt's always sad to see an old farmhouse being torn-down, but nothing lasts forever! At least they'll be able to get some good use out of the ground and keep it in the family. Such a neat old place!
ReplyDeleteLovely photos. I do get a little sad when I see lovely old farm houses like this one falling down slowly... I'm curious if you went inside the house... that is my favorite thing to do when I get the chance.
ReplyDeleteYay for "Grandma Day!" On the other hand, I'm sorry to hear they are tearing down this old farmstead. I'm sure it's a bit worse in person but to me, it looks pretty salvage-able.
ReplyDeleteThere is something very haunting about abandoned farm houses. I was going to use the word melancholy, but it doesn't quite go the distance. I remember my grandpa taking us by where he grew up, and all that was left was the old water pump. Hats off to those who came before us and truly plowed the way for us to farm.
ReplyDeleteGreat pics, and isn't it great to have a neighbor who will take a walk with you? Love that!
Amazing pictures - I love to do things like that and imagine what it would of been like there in it's hey day!
ReplyDeleteLovely photos! So sad that it will be torn down soon, but it has definitely seen better days :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pictures! My favorite is the last one with the sky and the corner. Gorgeous! So sad it will all be gone soon. Those are perfect photo backdrops!!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteHow extraordinarily gorgeous! The photos took my breath away. I love old things. :) Thanks for linking!
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to enjoy a day with your friend but I have to say that I am very sorry to hear that they will be tearing down that beautiful farm. We have a lot of old farms around here and l love driving down the roads looking at them. Your photos are just gorgeous!
