Small homes…

img_5554

I LOVE my new print from Etsy seller (and blogger) Amelia of Bright Sides Designs.

It hangs on the wall opposite my “spot” in the living room next to a picture of our house when it was built and a print depicting Charleston.  I know that small homes have their challenges, but there are also many things to love!

Do you have a small home? If so, I’d love to hear what you love about it and what you’ve done to make it “work” for your family.  I am working on a series of posts called “Love Your Little House” and I’m looking for 5 guest bloggers to contribute.  Please comment or email me with your ideas and I will try to work you into the series!

  1. I'm bummed - if we were further along with our renovation, and our family, I would have loved to contact you about participating! We live in a 1200sq ft farmhouse built in 1899. Sometimes it's tight! Looking forward to the series.

  2. I don't think most would consider our home small. But we moved from a 1910 4 bedroom farm house that was over 2000 sq ft (it had a foyer that could fit a piano and loveseat, a formal room, a family room, a laundry room that could work as a bedroom, a bath, a dining room and a huge kitchen downstairs, an old bedroom convereted to a bathroom and 4 bedrooms upstairs, plus a full basement and a full walk up attic) to one that is about half that size (half size walk up attic, half basement, living room, dining room, tiny kitchen, tiny bathroom, 3 bedrooms).
What makes it seem small is when you compare it to where we lived before. I've definitely had some 'make it work' moments, and if you have room for me, would love to contribute!

  3. Hi Katie! I have some ideas for decorating and loving your small home and would enjoy the chance to be a guest blogger for you! Our house is pretty small - 1300 sq. feet but it has been so fun to decorate and turn into a home! I will email you some of the ideas I have...

    1. I am unable to find your email address, so here are a few ideas I have...

Give the illusion of space by lightening up your home, using mirrors and selecting decor that fits.

Creating storage space in a small home. (Because small, old homes have none)

  4. Your print is awesome and I love that is is there with other pieces that you love and have such wonderful memories for you. I wish I could guest post, but my house is too big. I like smaller cozy homes, but Tom starts to feel cramped. I think it is because he grew up in a larger home so it is hard for him to think about going smaller!

  5. I think all homes eventually feel small. We extended our house but now it feels cramped again... maybe its the extra baby, maybe it because I keep too much stuff.

  6. I have been on a mission to make my small home bigger by constructing new rooms! does that count? My kingdom for more closets. Farm families 100 years ago apparently had no need for them when they planned their homes! ACK!

  7. Katie, I LOVE that print. Our small home has been a constant struggle. I purchased the house before my husband and I had even started dating, and now we've grown to a family of four. I don't think I'm qualified to give tips on making it work since I'm not entirely sure we have yet, but I just wanted to thank you for pointing me toward that small homes/tight families print. I've been working on the wall groupings in our living room and trying to get Tyler on board with putting up a picture of our house. I think that print will help. :)

  12. I'm not sure if we have a small home or not. It is more just the right size. But, the just-rightness of it has caused us to be creative. One of our favorite things has been having our kids share a bedroom. Even though they only sleep there, that has caused such bonding and friendship. It is amazing.
