But how do you get built ins if your house doesn’t already have them?
Build them!
(Easier said than done, right? We talked about this once before – if you start small, you CAN learn how to build them yourself.)
Or – you could hire someone else who can.
Now, I realize that hiring a carpenter might not be in everyone’s budget. But, having a carpenter build custom storage is a LOT cheaper than adding on a room.
And now, without further ado, built-in (p)inspiration!
That was just a small sample from my pinterest boards. Follow me there to see more!

we want to add some cutout shelving to the wall on the slanted-roof side of our bedroom! i just love the look and storage!
ReplyDeleteI adore built ins! We're definitely adding some to our house - a bookshelf in the living room "nook" and something bookshelf-y/desk-y upstairs in the bedrooms, too.
ReplyDeleteI have so many plans for built-ins. Mother Earth News had a recent article on how to build shelving--I plan on getting Ryan to try it all out.
ReplyDeleteI love built-in cabinets! The pictures you posted are awesome. I have a huge landing on our staircase... this might be a good spot for them!
ReplyDeleteI would seriously give up an appendage to have some fabulous built-ins in my house...LOVE THEM!!! These are some absolutely fantabulous examples of them too...that first long hallway is *insane*!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo Cool I want to live in those houses with all the storage I wish I had them in every room
ReplyDeleteI agree. Built-ins make a house unique!
ReplyDeleteGreat inspiration photos for built-ins. I love them too. Another way to get built-ins is to only semi build them yourselves. You buy the shelving unit (say from IKEA) and then attach it to the wall with molding and trim so it looks built-in. I've seen that done very well and it looks like you built the whole thing, especially if you paint it the colour of your trim.
ReplyDeleteOh, Katie, I just got back from vacation & am catching up on your Love Your Little House posts! I love the idea & I'm slowly learning to love our little house. We have a small Mill house that was built in the early 50's and measures a wee 1,082 sq ft. We have big dreams for our home but for now we are happy with how cozy it is for our little family of 3. Thanks for the series, Katie!
ReplyDeleteLove built-in...the perfect spot to add personal touches to your home...beautiful images!!
ReplyDeleteI love built ins too! My parents have them, but the building was crazy and so they are weird. I keep wanting to redo them for them, if I can get over my fear of a table saw...
