Farmhouse Mudroom

If you’re new here, there’s something you should know:

This is literally a farmhouse mudroom.

Not farmhouse style.  Or farmhouse inspired.

But really, truly, a working farmhouse mudroom.

This mudroom is the main entry to our 100-year-old home on our turkey farm.

When my husband (the farmer) comes in, he immediately turns and goes to the basement, where he has his own mudroom of sorts.  But our two little boys and I keep all of our shoes and outdoor gear in this little entryway.  (You can see the boys’ cubby here.)

I inherited an addiction to coats, and I live in Iowa where they say, “If you don’t like the weather today, wait until tomorrow” because it changes so frequently.  So this side is usually overflowing with my jackets.

Above, I have three baskets – sunglasses, “purse junk” and tools.  When I cleaned out the dresser in here, those were three of the main categories of junk that I found.

On the other side, we have headphones (not the kind for listening to music – the noise cancelling, protect-my-kids’-ears-when-they-ride-in-a-tractor-with-Daddy kind), sunscreen and bugspray, and “carseat parts” which are mostly the removable cupholders.

I made the labels in my digital scrapbooking program by using a chalkboard background and white text, then printed them out.

The dresser drawers hold my shoes, little boys shoes, and extra hats, gloves and scarves at this time of year.  My heels are in the organizer on the left.

Old wooden crates hold bike helmets, shoes and outdoor toys on the floor.

And you can see here – the mudroom leads straight into the kitchen, which underwent its own transformation 6 years ago.

One more picture – just for fun.

By the way – here’s the Kids’ Cubby on the other side of the mudroom:
